School festival helps pupils figure it all out

-

The school hosted its first-ever Numeracy Counts festival which provided S1-3 youngsters with a “unique opportunity to explore the importance of numeracy in school, life and work”.

Pupils spent the day hearing from a number of guest speakers including Dr Heather Reid, Professor Adam McBride, Dr Patrick Harness and Professor Roy Burden, and attending exciting and engaging workshops.

These covered maths through themes like 3D modelling, poetry, optical illusions, stories and music composition.

Cameron Mackay, principal teacher of literacy and numeracy, said:“Following on from the school’s two hugely successful literacy festivals, a great deal of effort went in to providing our pupils with an enjoyable and rewarding experience which will raise the profile of numeracy within our school community.

“Some of the workshops were provided by the Glasgow Science Centre, Strathclyde University, Creative Maths, Really Small Science, the Scottish Rugby Union and the Scottish Maritime Museum.

“We are grateful to all of our guests and were delighted to welcome them into Coatbridge High.”

Head teacher Janie O’Neill said:“Numeracy does indeed count and it was time to blast the myths that it is either something we are‘good’ or‘bad’at.

“We are delighted that so many busy people from the academic world and the world of work were willing to give up their time to come and support our endeavours.

“Well done to staff involved in the planning and delivery of this ambitious event.”
