Golden Wedding Anniversaries Fifty reasons to celebrate
Happy couples attend big bash
Five Monklands couples enjoyed a glittering day as they attended a special celebration to mark their half-centuries of marriage.
Airdrie couples Thomas and Margaret Kane, George and Elizabeth Love, and Hugh and Ruby McWhinnie, were among those attending the annual golden weddings celebration jointly hosted by North and South Lanarkshire Councils.
They were joined by Ross and Anne Mackie of Chapelhall and Coatbridge couple Thomas and Sarah Parker, who also reached the special landmark this year after tying the knot in 1968.
A total of 66 happy couples from across the county shared afternoon tea and danced to music of their era, bringing back happy memories of their big days 50 years ago.
North Lanarkshire provost Jean Jones, who was in attendance at the event, said: “Things have changed so much since 1968, but the one thing which has remained is the lasting commitment that these couples have to each other.
“We’re now living in a world where we can get everything superfast, delivered the next day, and up to the minute. But it’s important to take time to remember the lasting memories over the past 50 years.
“I congratulate every couple on reaching this milestone in their married lives and I hope they all have many more happy years together.”
Those celebrating golden weddings were welcomed to the celebration by South Lanarkshire provost Ian McAllan, who said: “There is no one formula for a happy marriage – every one is unique and there are different difficulties and joys that each couple faces along the way.
“What we saw at this event is that it’s all about finding that one person who is for you and, with that perfect pairing, a bond is formed that is unshakeable.
“It was a delight to see that in so many couples and each one of them has my admiration and my congratulations.”
Guests at the event in Hamilton also included South Lanarkshire Council leader John Ross and wife Irene, themselves celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this year.
