Yob to do unpaid work

- Court reporter

A foul-tempered Coatbridge yob has been sentenced to unpaid work for offences including struggling with his partner and punching a car’s wing mirror.

Violent Martin Hughes, 41, lost it with the stricken woman on his home town’s Boswell Drive on July 14.

He shouted and swore at her before spouting “offensive remarks” and struggling with her at the property.

Hughes went on to punch a parked vehicle’s “nearside wing mirror”, causing it to break.

During the troubling incident, Hughes also placed two other women in a state of fear and alarm with his “threatening and abusive behaviour”, which included further shouting and swearing.

Dunbeth Court native Hughes was later taken into custody and pled guilty to his tirade.

A deferral was then ordered at Airdrie Sheriff Court until last week to allow for criminal justice social work reports.

Hughes’ defence lawyer, Tony Linden, told the court his client “regretted his actions and realises this type of behaviour is unacceptable”.

Passing sentence, Sheriff Frank Pieri informed Hughes:“I will impose a community payback order with 80 hours’ unpaid work. I have reduced this from 100 [hours] due to your plea.

“This is a direct alternative to a fine.”
