Hometown tribute
While Iris and the grateful villagers of Clary paid tribute to Peter’s sacrifice and bravery in France, members of the soldier’s extended family simultaneously attended a memorial service in his home town.
Relatives including renowned comic book writer and movie producer Mark Millar turned out to pay their respects at Coatbridge cenotaph.
Wreaths were laid in tribute to Peter and his fellow members of the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) 1st Battalion on the centenary of their passing.
Peter’s great-niece Iris said: “Many, many more of Peter’s extended family from across the world would have been with us in Coatbridge or France but for the time and distance.
“It was lovely to be able to link two services across the Channel honouring Peter and his brave battalion comrades.”
Comic book king Mark Millar added his tribute to a real-life superhero, adding: “It’s an amazing story and a poignant one for our large, extended family of O’Hares.
“His [Peter’s] story is 100 years old and many details lost in the mists of time; but our family recently received the very sad, homesick letters he sent to our grandmother when he was serving in France and it gives an insight into just how young he was.
“This memorial service really was a tremendous honour for all his living relatives – a young Coatbridge guy paying the ultimate price to ensure the freedom of people he had never met.”
