Disgust over couple’s treatment of pet dog

-

Our story about an Airdrie couple whose neglect of their dog led to it being put down struck a chord with the Advertiser’s social media community.

James and Jacqueline McGrory, of Petersburn, didn’t take collie Penny for veterinary treatment despite visible alopecia and sores all over her body.

Following an anonymous call to the Scottish SPCA , Penny was taken from the couple for immediate treatment but, after failing to respond, she was put to sleep so as not to “extend her suffering”.

The pair’s defence solicitor’s claim that “they both dearly loved this dog” cut no ice with Ross Anderson, who said: “Loved the dog? Care for it then. Another wee slap-on-the-wrist fine.

“They are disgusting people for causing unnecessary death and pain. Rest in peace poor dog.”

Audrey Kennedy agreed: “Loved the dog dearly? I think not.

“Absolutely disgusting; not a care in the world.”

Elaine McMath Patrick opined: “People need to start being sent to prison for neglecting their animals! Disgusting human beings.”

Tony Culver added: “I don’t understand how anyone could mistreat an animal in such a way. “It’s such a cruel waste of life.” In other news from last week’s Advertiser, North Lanarkshire is to welcome 50 more refugees from the war in Syria to settle in the authority area.

Members of the council’s policy and resources committee also agreed a potential future expansion of the programme for relatives of those who have already moved here, after hearing about efforts to reunite separated families.

Natalie Cunningham said: “I hope Coatbridge and Airdrie gives these poor people some solace and they can start to rebuild their lives after having to flee their own.”

Seamus O’Neill posted: “I’m pleased we are helping people who literally only have the clothes they stand in; best of luck to them.”

Ann Marie Stepney commented: “Good luck to you all. I hope you find peace in your lives.”

Ross Brown added: “I welcome you to the community friends and look forward to meeting you all.”

Gerry McCarron had another suggestion to aid the refugees: “I feel more could be done. How about free bus passes too?”
