Admonished over assault on her mum Internet video singer in court

- Andrew Bargh

A Coatbridge woman who became an internet hit when footage of her singing at her mother’s graveside went viral was admonished in court for assaulting her mum – and then told the Advertiser, “put that in your paper!”

A video clip surfaced earlier this year of Denise ‘ Feminem’ Ferrie, 34, performing 60s hit My Boy Lollipop in tribute to her late mother, Elizabeth McGeough.

In the footage, filmed at Coltswood cemetery, Ferrie can be heard saying, “it was her song with my dad”.

The video was viewed millions of times and Ferrie went on to enjoy a brief brush with fame by performing the song in a number of nightclubs.

This led to her being arrested at a sold-out gig at Glasgow’s Bar Budda over outstanding warrants .

We reported in May that the Arnott Drive resident, who pleaded guilty to the assault on her mum, had her sentence deferred for four months and was given the chance by Sheriff Petra Collins to prove she could be of good behaviour.

During one of her court appearances, Ferrie’s defence solicitor, Nicky Matteo, said: “She has become somewhat of a local celebrity on social media.

“You may be aware that someone uploaded footage of her singing on to the internet a couple of weeks ago.

“It is not the case that she tried to hide from the police and her life seems to be going in the right direction.

“She had a horrific upbringing and is a vulnerable person.”

During sentencing, Sheriff Collins warned Ferrie: “If you take this opportunity then it will go in your favour.

“If not, I will have to visit these cases again.

“When you return, a report from the police will be available in court which will hopefully show you’ve been of good behaviour.”

Last week at Airdrie Sheriff Court the procurator fiscal confirmed Ferrie had recently stayed out of trouble and Sheriff Collins admonished and dismissed her.
