Diamonds are ready for title showdown

Cameron: We can carry momentum into City clash

- Andrew Bargh

Airdrieonians ladies team are preparing for a title showdown tomorrow night with Glasgow City Development.

The Diamond girls are one point ahead of their rivals with two matches remaining this season.

Airdrie hammered West Park United 10-0 at the Penny Cars stadium on Sunday, meaning a point against City puts them one game away from securing the SWFL Division Two central title – and the promotion that comes with it.

Ahead of the match in Glasgow tomorrow and Sunday’s encounter with mid- table Murieston United, coach Kate Cameron said: “We expected to beat West Park and it’s onto Thursday now.

“We’re a point ahead of them so we just need to draw the game and that sets us up for Sunday which we’re confident for.

“The girls are buzzing for the game and believe they will get the job done.

“Winning 10-0 on Sunday gave us a good boost but we can’t afford to get complacent.

“We’re working on how to combat City’s fast passing and pace and finding a formation that will counter-act that.

“We won’t play for a draw but we can’t go out there all guns blazing and throwing people up the park.

“As soon as the game starts we’ll have done our job so far and need to keep it that way.

“The pressure is on City as they must win and we only need to avoid defeat.

“We’ve got a strong team and whether we win, lose or draw I can’t take anything away from the girls who have been outstanding all year.”

If the Diamonds are unable to secure the league trophy, it may not end all hopes for silverware being associated with the team this season.

Cameron explained: “Our goalkeeper Stacey McCallum has been nominated for the SWFL Dvision Two player of the year.

“She’s up against three other players and will find out at a ceremony on November 17.

“She might end up with an unusual hat-trick for a goalkeeper of league title, league player of the year and club player of the year!

“She’s got so much hunger and desire and she’ll be over the moon to be nominated.

“Hopefully we can finish the job in the league and then enjoy the ceremony.”
