board we were going to make a judgement based on the results against Formartine and then Queen’s Park this coming weekend.

“John realised himself, though, that it wasn’t good enough and chose to resign. He left on amicable terms and chose the right decision for the club.

“In the last year our form has been desperate and it’s been a pretty dramatic downward spiral.

“We were doing fine in League One but ended up getting relegated and we haven’t recovered well from that.

“We have one aim now – to get off the bottom spot in the league as quickly as possible.

“We don’t have a particular person in mind who can do that and it’s an open field for applications.

“We’re in a bit of a hole at the moment, though, and we need someone who can motivate the players as we’re desperate to stay in the senior league set-up.”

The Rovers board have come under fire on forums and social media for their appointment of Brogan in the summer.

The now former boss, who was recently voted in the club’s all-time XI thanks to his time there in the 70s, had been managing in the west region’s junior leagues before being selected for the role.

He returned to familiar territory to cherry-pick a host of players from the junior set-up to replenish the Rovers squad after all but three players moved on in May.

But despite this, Boyd reiterated:“I don’t think appointing John was a massive gamble compared to anyone else.

“When you appoint a manager you let him make decisions, but at the moment it looks lke those decisions weren’t the best ones.

“The new manager now needs to get the best out of his players.

“We have to take responsbility as a board for the appointment.

“This one wasn’t a success and sometimes that’s what happens, but we’ll do our best to make sure the next one is the right decision.”
