Team on same page at Kids’ Lit Quiz heats

Airdrie secondary school pupils took a novel approach to shine at a national book- themed bonanza.

The first-year youngsters from Caldervale High were on the same page as they finished in a highly commendabl­e eighth place at the west of Scotland heats of the Kids’ Lit Quiz 2018.

The quality quartet finished only 11-and-a-half points behind the top-scoring team and their performanc­e was hailed by their fellow pupils and school staff.

A Caldervale High spokespers­on said: “The group did a fantastic job in a very competitiv­e contest involving several talented teams to finish in eighth place overall.

“At the halfway stage the team were sitting in fourth place, but a hard-fought second round saw them fall to their eventual slot.

“They finished with a score of 78.5 points – not far behind the top team, who scored 90.

“All of the pupils involved had a great day out, achieved an outstandin­g score and are now ready to sign up for next year’s competitio­n.”

It wasn’t all about testing their book brain power, though, as the youngsters also took advantage of the opportunit­y to mingle with some guest authors.

The school spokespers­on added: “They were delighted to get the chance to buy books written by the team of authors attending the event, which the writers very kindly autographe­d.

“All of the pupils were a credit to the school and showed a wonderful aptitude for everything associated with the literary world.

“Reading is a passion for the team and we’re delighted they were involved in this event.”
