Hipsway comeback tour kicks off in Airdrie

Band’s intimate gig

- Ian Bunting

Scottish rockers Hipsway are kicking off their comeback tour in Airdrie next month – and tickets for the gig are on sale now.

The Glaswegian band will perform tracks from their first album since 1989, Smoke and Dreams, during an “intimate live performance” at Sir John Wilson town hall on December 12.

The four- strong outfit was formed in 1984 by ex-Altered Images guitarist Johnny McElhone on bass, alongside Grahame Skinner, Pim Jones and Harry Travers.

Their music was characterised by Skinner’s deep vocals and Jones’ tight guitar playing and by 1985, the band had released their first, eponymously-titled album.

They are best known for their hits The Honeythief and Tinder, with the former reaching number 17 in the UK singles chart in 1985 and the latter finding fame in soundtracking a McEwan’s Lager commercial.

Following a period apart, which saw McElhone go on to found the band Texas and Skinner managing a cafe in Partick, Hipsway reformed last year to play a few gigs around Scotland to support the re-release of their first album.

A spokesperson for their upcoming Airdrie concert said: “The gigs [last year] were a huge success, proving that an appetite remained for the band.

“Now with their freshly recorded new album – Smoke and Dreams – Hipsway take to the road with their new material along with the classics.

“Be the first to see them perform their first album since 1989 in an intimate live performance.”

Hipsway’s December 12 gig gets underway at 7.30pm and is for over-14s only; under-16s must be accompanied by an adult.

Tickets, priced £25 plus a 50p commission fee, are available online at culturenl. co. uk or by calling 01698 403120.
