Cash gift to be used to get gym in shape

- Ian Bunting

An Airdrie gym will be able to build stronger links with the community thanks to a donation from Penny Cars.

The gesture from bosses at the taxi firm will boost the coffers at Crossfit Airdrie.

The not- for- profit gym, based at Airdrieonians’ Penny Cars Stadium, will use the funding to improve facilities and equipment.

Craig Moffat of Crossfit told the Advertiser: “This wonderful donation from Penny Cars will make a massive difference to the gym and the community.

“Penny Cars love the gym and what we do for the people of Airdrie.

“We will spend the funding on our facilities. We have 200 members, some of whom train four to five days a week, so our equipment is used regularly.

“We may replace kit or buy new types of kit and will paint and freshen up the gym.

“Members will get a big say in how the money is spent as everyone plays an integral part in the gym. The work they put in has been unbelievable and we like to make them feel involved every step of the way.

“Penny Cars really are driving the community of Airdrie and this donation will help people to come along and get fit.

“It will also help their efforts to get ready for competitions. We’ve got a lot of youngsters with great potential to shine in all sorts of physical and sporting fields.

“Our members include everyone from doctors and lawyers to bus drivers and bricklayers and they all come together to support each other.”

Craig went on: “Crossfit Airdrie was put together by six co-founders three years ago.

“They decided to get together to do their own thing and, thanks to a good relationship with the owners of the Penny Cars Stadium, managed to get a space under one of the stands

“We’re not in it for ourselves but for the whole community.

“I believe we are one of the cheapest Crossfit facilities in Britain and members aren’t just locally based. We have people coming from places like Glasgow, Cumbernauld and Bathgate.

“We’ve taken on 10 members who have worked hard to become level one Crossfit coaches. The gym is really keen to build from within and our coaches thrive on excellence.

“This work is a real passion of ours and a massive team effort.” – The Advertiser will have details of a Crossfit Airdrie competition offer being run by Penny Cars in the coming weeks.
