A Coatbridge engineering firm will sponsor a top rugby team – much to the delight of a former star.

Cairnhill Steel Solutions have signed a deal with the Melrose Sevens starting next year, which has received the thumbs up from rugby legend Doddie Weir, who won multiple titles with Melrose RFC.

The main stand at the team’s ground – the Greenyards – will be renamed the Cairnhill Steel Solutions Stand, as part of the deal, and the company’s logo will appear on the players’ kit during the Sevens event and other major tournaments.

Former star Doddie said: “The Melrose Sevens has a huge place in the history of our great game, giving the world the sport of rugby sevens which is now enjoyed at Olympic and Commonwealth Games level, and across the planet with the World Rugby Sevens Series.

“The Melrose Sevens also holds a significant place in my rugby career, and I look forward to all parties enjoying continued success in the future thanks to this generous sponsorship.”

Cairnhill work throughout the UK offering a range of clients steel solutions to complex engineering and construction projects. They have a workforce of around 150 at their Coatbridge base and a turnover of £20 million.

Managing director Neil Watson said: “We are delighted to be sponsoring such an iconic event as the Melrose Sevens, and my special thanks go to Doddie Weir for his support and collaboration on this new partnership.

“Melrose is the home of Rugby Sevens and to be able to play a small part in this historic event is fantastic.

“I’m looking forward to developing our relationship with Melrose RFC and continuing to help where we can with youth rugby, not only within Scotland, but in the UK as a whole.”

The Coatbridge organisation already have an impressive portfolio of rugby sponsorships.

Melrose club’s president Douglas Hardie added: “We are delighted that Cairnhill have agreed to be a sponsor at the sevens in 2019.

“They will become a partner and this will include the renaming of the main grandstand.

“Cairnhill will also feature on the team’s playing jersey for the event and other sevens tournaments that Melrose take part in, including all rounds of Kings of the Sevens.”
