Extra cash to support rape victims

-

Lanarkshire Rape Crisis Centre is to receive a funding boost from the Scottish Government.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced that rape crisis centres across Scotland will receive £1.5 million to support victims of sexual violence.

The Lanarkshire centre, based in Hamilton, will receive £37,000 over three years.

Minister for older people and equalities Christina McKelvie said: “We are committed to preventing and eradicating violence against women and girls.

“And a huge part of delivering on that commitment is ensuring that victims of rape or sexual assault are able to come forward and access the right support when they need it.

“The work that rape crisis centres do is invaluable and that is why I am delighted to confirm the distribution to 14 centres.”

Anne McGuire, manager of the Lanarkshire centre, said: “We are delighted with the Scottish Government’s announcement of additional funds to support rape crisis centres in Scotland.

“We have already been informed that our centre has been allocated £37,000 per annum over the next three years to help support services.

“An additional support worker will be employed by the centre and this, in effect, will help to reduce the current waiting time for face to face support.”
