Safe students from four Monklands schools were among the award recipients at North Lanarkshire’s annual junior road safety officer (JRSO) awards.

Greenhill Primary’s team of Leah McBride, Sonny Nelson and Lisa McCarroll were runners-up in the safety noticeboard category and joint third for best road safety campaign – alongside Ciaran Whelehan and Katie Andrews of St Michael’s Primary in Moodiesburn.

Sikeside Primary staff member Karen Dick was runner- up in the co-ordinator category; while among the pupil teams earning highly commended awards were St Timothy’s quartet Lucy Sheridan, Logan Chisholm, Shannon Campbell and Ava McLaughlin, and Bargeddie Primary representatives Cameron Foot and Ke i ra McCormick.

JRSOs volunteer in each North Lanarkshire primary school to raise awareness of road safety with fellow pupils, teachers, parents and the community.

Transportation convener Michael McPake, the Glenboig councillor, presented the awards and said: “Congratulations to all our prize winners at the junior road safety officers awards for their excellent work during the last year.

“They have worked hard to devise campaigns and initiatives to highlight the importance of road safety; and have personally shown enthusiasm, initiative and commitment to their roles.

“On behalf of the council, thank you to all our JRSOs across North Lanarkshire for their hard work.”

The awards ceremony was organised by the council’s safe and sustainable travel team and sponsored by roads maintenance firm Amey.
