New campaign by Samaritans

-

Lanarkshire Samaritans are marking the organisation’s annual awareness month by highlighting tips for listening to relatives, friends and those who may need support.

The“talk to us”project aims to let people know that Samaritans are available for anyone going through a tough time, whatever the time of day or night.

Its five-step SHUSH listening tips aim to help people lend an ear to“anyone who may be struggling”, with the advice being –

Show you care: by focusing just on the other person, making eye contact and putting away your phone

Have patience: as it may take time and several attempts before a person is ready to open up

Use open questions: that need more than a yes or no answer, plus follow-up, such as“tell me more”

Say it back: to check you’ve understood, but don’t interrupt or offer a solution

Have courage: don’t be put off by a negative response and don’t be afraid to leave silence.

A Lanarkshire branch spokesperson said:“Sometimes, we want to be there for someone but don’t know how to start. We recommend that if you’re worried about someone, you try talking to them.

“It’s OK if you’re not an expert – just listening can help someone work through what’s on their mind. We want to raise awareness that listening can save lives.”

Samaritans can be contacted free of charge at any time by calling 116 123 from any phone, even a mobile without credit; the number won’t show up on a phone bill.

The charity can also be contacted by emailing jo@samaritans.org, visiting the Lanarkshire branch at Selkirk Place in Hamilton, at www.samaritans.org and via Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
