Readers slam reduction in libraries’ opening hours

Evening opening is to be reduced at Airdrie and Coatbridge libraries, while Chapelhall is to close on Friday afternoons and Saturdays following funding cuts to Culture NL. The town- centre libraries are currently open until 7pm from Monday to Thursday, but this will now take place on only two evenings per week – with users being asked to choose their preferred days. This news didn’t sit very well with the Advertiser’s Facebook readers, with Margaret Cairney posting: “I think it is terrible what they are doing; I am sure kids from Chapelhall Primary use the [village’s] library.” Kevin McHugh added: “What is the world coming to when even library hours are being cut? A lot of people rely on libraries for a place to go.” Brian Murphy opined: “Maybe if North Lanarkshire Council weren’t paying off employees with golden goodbyes, then the libraries could stay open.” This was a view backed by Franny Tominey: “If they weren’t paying huge wages to their employees then maybe these services could be saved.” Katie Daniels commented: “This is a real shame; nothing beats going to the library and taking home a good book or two.” While Diane Cropper joked: “The amount I pay in fines could probably keep them open!” The Advertiser’s social media community also responded to Airdrie gym owner Anton Danyluk’s time on hit reality TV show Love Island coming to an end. The 24-year-old just missed out on a place on the series’ grand final – and its £50,000 prize – when he and current flame Belle Hassan were voted out just one day before the show’s climax. Stuart Donaldson said: “Maybe they’ll hit it off after filming; could be the real deal.” Stephanie Braiden opined: “Anton and Belle should have won.” Linda Marshall agreed: “They should have won the whole thing.” But Lesley Calder added: “There was absolutely no chemistry between the two of them.”
