Some surface soil is removed
Council officials have confirmed that the ground showing an elevated chemical level has been remediated.
North Lanarkshire responded to the review report by welcoming its confirmation that “the schools are safe for pupils and staff”– and say they are implementing its recommendations.
A council spokesperson said: “Work to remediate a location at the edge of the campus was carried out on Saturday and observed by independent experts. This involved the removal of surface soils and laying of a geomembrane below concrete slabs.
“The independent experts have confirmed that the work carried out prevents any exposure of site users to the area of soil in question.”
The local authority says it will also announce plans this week for the establishment of the recommended site recovery group “involving the school community” and that detailed information about its programme of gas membrane testing will be published “in the coming days”.
Council officials also confirmed that the schools’ main water supply pipe has been replaced and that quality test results will be published, in conjunction with Scottish Water, this month and in October and January.
Robert Steenson, the authority’s executive director for enterprise and communities, said: “We’re pleased that the independent review agrees with the council’s position throughout, that the schools are safe and there is no link between them and any serious illness.
“All concerned can be assured by the key findings and we will now focus on working with these groups as we look to a bright future and welcoming pupils back to what are outstanding, highperforming schools with enthusiastic and dedicated staff.”
NHS Lanarkshire also welcomed the report, with director of public health Gabe Docherty saying it “provides a clear reassurance”.
He said: “We recognise that this has been a difficult period for everyone involved with the schools and we welcome their opening to start their new school year.
“We have actively engaged with those directly involved and the wider community and will continue to do so, and we remain committed to working with all partners to provide the support and reassurance required around public health to enable the school to move forward positively and confidently.”
