Airdrie golfer Greg Dalziel has set his sights on European glory if he can put in a top performance at the Scottish PGA Championship next month.

The 18- year- old is currently playing on the ‘ PGA Tartan Tour’ after turning professional, but has ambitions of taking to the greens alongside big names like Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia, and Tommy Fleetwood.

He is battling it out with top Scots, and has earned a couple of wins and runnersup prizes along the way.

The Airdrie Golf Club star has performed well against top Scottish professionals who have previously competed on the European Tour.

In his last competition, the Birdietime PGA Assistants’ Championship at Pleasington GC in Blackburn, Lancashire, Dalziel was blighted by the weather.

The former Caldervale High School pupil had gained automatic qualification by winning the Scotland section of ‘ Birdietime PGA Assistants’ Championship’ competition at Cowglen Golf Club, earning him a spot in the contingent heading south for the tournament.

However, Greg missed the cut as two rounds in succession were rained off in England.

Dalziel hopes to bounce back from that disappointment and enjoy a successful Scottish PGA.

The tournament will start on September 3 at Downfield Golf Course in Dundee.

He believes that will continue his build to a place on the Euro-pro tour next year.

He told the Advertiser: “My ultimate target is to play on the European Tour, alongside the likes of McIlroy, Fleetwood and Garcia.

“I do recognise, however, that there is much work to be done before that will happen.

“My initial target will be qualifying for the Euro-pro tour next year. The remainder of this year I will be competing in the Scottish PGA tour and most importantly, as is the case with most young golfers, looking for sponsors to help me achieve my ultimate target.”

Greg currently sits in 15th place in the ‘PGA in Scotland Order of Merit’ – which marks the top golfers in the country.
