The Carluke singer’s first solo record Impossible Stuff has been shortlisted for the Scottish Album of the Year (SAY) award, which will be handed out this Friday at the Queen’s Hall in Edinburgh.

And Carla, who also sings in indie pop band Teen Canteen, told The Ticket that she was taken aback to be nominated.

She said: “When the longlist was revealed I felt like I was having an out of body experiencing seeing my album cover amongst the other 19 nominated albums. It’s been a truly great year for Scottish music with some huge albums by established artists.

“Then when the shortlist was announced I was with my friends Thomas, Ed and Phoebe, listening to the radio at work. I was sick before it was announced, I don’t know why I was so nervous – I guess after writing, performing and recording for 14 years, I really appreciate the recognition for this album!

“Thomas picked me up and ran around the shop and Phoebe popped a cork on a bottle of fizz (Carla works in Glasgow craft beer store Valhalla’s Goat). “I can’t get my head round it.” Released on indie label Olive Grove, Impossible Stuff is a gloriously upbeat and strident pop collection of songs. It was initially inspired by Carla travelling to Canada to take part in a songwriter’s workshop.

Upon her return she moved back home to Carluke and dedicated herself to make the sort of pop album she had always dreamed of.

She added: “Writing this album was the one time I let myself focus on making music. I’ll forever be thankful to my mum for letting me move all my stuff back home and set up a studio built around my childhood piano. To an extent I isolated myself to focus on writing it.”

Already a prolific collaborator with other acts, the past year has seen Carla perform onstage with Scottish music royalty such as the Vaselines and Belle & Sebastian – appearing with both acts on the Boaty Weekender, a four day cruise that set sail from Barcelona.

“The Boaty Weekender was the best weekend of my life and I know I was super lucky to be there, never mind to perform at it.

“I was so nervous singing with the Belles that I tripped on stage and kept my eyes shut for most of the performance because when I opened them and saw 2000 people singing along to my song it felt like my eyes were still shut and I was dreaming! And Carla’s dreams seem to be coming true. “I am thankful that I am still making music because I don’t know how long it will last. The14-year-old me who wrote journals about music can’t believe what’s happening to 34-year-old me.

“I wish I could travel back in time and tell her everything is going to be OK.”
