A group aimed at shedding pounds has helped raise more than £ 4000 for St Andrew’s Hospice.

Lighter Weighs founder Gill Duncan arranged an afternoon tea event attended by 200 members and friends – and supplemented the total through her own personal sponsored slim.

Hospice representative Lorraine Maginnis collected the cheque after guests had dug deep during an afternoon of fashion, dancing, raffles, craft stalls and hearing from a motivational speaker.

The St Andrew’s fundraiser praised the “fantastic achievement” and said: “I want to say a huge thank you to Gill, to her mum and sister who were key supporters, and also to the ladies who helped with raffle prizes and came along on the day.

“The difference this will make to our patients and families is amazing, and on behalf of all the team at the hospice, we thank Gill and her supporters.”

Gill said of the event at the Alona Hotel in Strathclyde Park: “I’ve always admired the work the hospice does; and my members are the most generous people you’ll find, so the two things just naturally came together!

“I thought it would be fun if members could celebrate the hundreds of pounds they’ve lost by raising hundreds of pounds for the charity.

“Thank you to my members – they’re really special people, and I’m proud of every single one of them.”

Lunch and dessert of a “wall of doughnuts” donated by McGhee’s were followed by a fashion show.

Attendees were also treated to live music by JuBillie, a speech by Elaine Kennedy McIvor to help class members stick to their healthy lifestyles, stalls and a raffle with prizes generously donated by Radisson Red and Grand Central hotels, Slaters Menswear, myhotelbreak. com and psychic Margaret Solis.

Gill took the fundraising total over the £4000 landmark by losing 21 pounds in weight through her very own sponsored slim.

She said: “I’m happy to say I hit that target, and added the proceeds to the charity pot; it was a brilliant incentive to stick to my own healthy eating plan.” 2 Glenburn Rd, East Kilbride, G74 5BA
