East eyes up goal after strike cut from records

Albion Rovers striker Euan East has seen his only goal at Hampden struck from the record books – but is determined to bag another this weekend.

Last season while on the books at Queen’s Park, the striker netted against Clyde in dramatic fashion – volleying home in the 85th minute to level the Glasgow derby having come off the bench.

However, following his moment of glory at the national stadium Clyde were sanctioned for fielding an ineligible player and the Spiders were handed a 3-0 victory.

It’s the goal that never was after the SPFL punished the Bully Wee, but the 19-year-old says he “still takes it” as his goal, despite the strike being wiped from the annals of history.

Rovers’ top scorer, who has bagged four already this term, is keen to set the record straight and bag another – or his first – goal at the home of Scottish football this weekend for his new side.

East told the Advertiser: “I don’t really think of it as not being my goal –that was one of my highlights from my time at the club.

“I hadn’t been getting much game time at Queen’s Park and I only got around five minutes at the end of the game.

“So that was a great moment for me. I had really only been playing as a winger at Queen’s Park so it was great to get that goal.”

He continued: “Hopefully I can get another one this weekend at Hampden.

“I’ve really been enjoying getting my chance up front at Albion Rovers and hopefully I can keep getting the goals for the rest of the season.”

East believes Rovers could have had “maximum points from all of our games so far” and is enjoying the way the side have started under Kevin Harper.

He said: “We are taking the game to teams, which is really good for me as an attacking player, and really different from the Albion Rovers I played last season at Queen’s Park.

“We won our last game but could have played better, so it’s really important to get a result against Queen’s Park.” Euan East is enjoying his football at Albion Rovers. Photo: Ben Kearney
