An Ai rdrie gran who struggled with weight issues for more than 40 years now has her diabetes “under control” after shedding more than 3st.

Elizabeth Cushley was hospitalised and “came very close to falling into a diabetic coma” following her Type 2 diabetes diagnosis in 2014.

But she decided to tackle her health issues by joining St Columba’s church Slimming World and no longer has to take injections for her condition.

Elizabeth said: “I have struggled with my weight since I was a teenager – in excess of 40 years.

“After I was diagnosed as Type 2 diabetic, I became very unwell and came very close to falling into a diabetic coma.

“I was also hospitalised and after being discharged, I required four injections a day to the stomach which led to unsightly bruising.

“However, after losing more than 3st with Slimming World, I was able to stop all of my injections and now control my diabetes with medication only.”

Elizabeth added: “I had lost weight on numerous occasions, via the latest fad diets, but until now had never managed to maintain it.

“I heard workmates who were on Slimming World talking about their journeys and the amount of free foods they ate; I had no idea what free food was and decided to find out more.

“At times I’ve found the journey difficult and have had a few bumps along the way; but overall I have found it most rewarding.

“The ups and downs are there to help us achieve more; and I’ve had more ups than downs.”

Elizabeth is “delighted” with her transformation – and paid tribute to her fellow slimmers.

She said: “I get a lot of compliments from family and friends about my appearance and they have noticed how much more energetic I am.

“I can also keep up with my four-year-old granddaughter Sienna who loves to come along to group.

“The support of my amazing consultant Lynn, and other members of the group who have experienced the same difficulties that I’ve had, kept me going through the difficult times.

“Sharing my problems with other members has made me focus on the week ahead to believe in myself and that I can achieve anything I really want to.

“For many years I’ve been a member of a rambling group and while I did walk a lot, I always opted for the easier option and was known as one of the slower walkers.

“Now, since losing the weight and reducing medication, I enjoy more difficult and challenging walks and thoroughly enjoy testing myself more and more.

“I have no doubt that without my participation in Slimming World I would have been unable to meet these challenges.”

Elizabeth added: “Without our wonderful consultant Lynn I wouldn’t be where I am today; she is always at hand no matter the time of day, wether it be a text or a phone call.

“There are so many benefits to coming to, and staying in, the group. We are a tight family and you meet a lot of lovely people who are all there for the exact same thing.”

Consultant Lynn Johnston said: “Elizabeth has done exceptionally well since joining our group and I am thrilled to see her transformation.

“The fact she has brought her diabetes under control is fantastic and just shows what can be achieved.

“There are an estimated 4.5 million people with diabetes in the UK and a survey showed that all Slimming World groups have at least one member who has diabetes.

“Although diabetes can’t be cured, it can be treated very successfully and lifestyle changes, such as a healthier diet and weight loss, are often an important part of treatment.

“A survey of Slimming World members revealed t hat they often get differing dietary advice from their diabetes care teams dependent on their individual needs.

“However, with our superflexible Extra Easy plan, all our members will find they are able to accommodate their personal dietary recommendations.”

Lynn’s groups meet on Mondays at Airdrie Golf Club and Thursdays at St Columba’s church – both at 5.30pm and 7.30pm – as well as in Calderbank church on Saturdays at 8am. New members are welcome to attend.
