WORKING FOR YOU Supreme Court ruling was the ‘right decision’
I am writing this column from my office in the House of Commons after the Supreme Court’s historic ruling that Boris Johnson’s government had unlawfully suspended Parliament.
The Supreme Court’s decision was right, and has prevented Mr Johnson from pushing through a no-deal Brexit with no scrutiny from MPs.
I will continue to oppose a no- deal Brexit as it would be devastating for jobs, living standards and businesses across my Coatbridge, Chryston and Bellshill constituency.
The Labour Party conference has also just taken place in Brighton and we have outlined a bold programme for government.
We will act to tackle in-work poverty, invest in our public services and let the British people have the final say on Brexit in a public vote.
I was particularly pleased with the pledge that a future Labour government would seek to protect free TV licences for those aged 75 and over.
I have also been out campaigning across the local area in recent weeks, gathering signatures for my petition to save the free TV licences – an issue I feel very strongly about.
I’m now back working on behalf of my constituents and holding the government to account on a range of issues, including the collapse of Thomas Cook, which I know has affected some of my constituents.
I am angry at the government for standing by as Thomas Cook sank when a simple bailout could have kept the company afloat, saved 9000 jobs and allowed the business to be sold as a going concern.
I would like to express my congratulations to Norah Mooney on her election as a councillor for Thorniewood ward on North Lanarkshire Council.
As my successor in the ward, I know Norah will be a strong champion for her community – and I look forward to working with her.
Any of my constituents looking to discuss any matters can contact my office team on 01236 434 565 or email me at hugh.gaffney.mp@parliament.uk.
