Mary’s garden is a blooming marvel

A green- finger Airdrie woman was blooming delighted as she became the proud owner of North Lanarkshire’s best garden.

Mary Struthers works on her prized plants, fabulous flowers and glorious grass “day and night” and her sensational success also saw her pocket £100 of shopping vouchers.

Mary’s Calderbank garden, which was nominated by housing officer Michaela McGuinness, took home the best garden accolade in the council’s North Lanarkshire in Bloom competition.

Judging was tough but after “much deliberation” Mary secured the top prize, with Sunart Street retirement housing complex in Wishaw winning best communal garden.

Mary said: “I was so surprised but absolutely delighted to be named as the winner.

“I am out in my garden every day and sometimes even venture out at night to remove any pesky garden slugs.

“I’m always happy to provide cuttings to friends and neighbours so their gardens can benefit too.

“I was nominated by one of the local housing advisors, Michaela McGuinness, which was lovely and made the award that bit more special.”

Stephen Llewellyn, head of housing solutions for the council, added: “The judges had a tall order as the standard was very high and it was fabulous to see so many budding gardeners taking part.

“Our tenants are very imaginative in terms of how they are using their outdoor space and really help brighten up our local communities.

“It’s great to see the communal winners too as it illustrates the fantastic results that can be achieved when people come together to share their skills. It’s important we recognise the hard work and dedication of all those involved.

“Well done to everyone who took part.

“For the first time the garden competition was organised by our tenant participation team as a stand-alone event and we hope to grow this year on year.”
