Airdrieonians skipper Sean Crighton said Saturday’s shock Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup exit to Elgin should act up as a wake- up call for the players.

After defeat to the League Two opposition, the Diamonds will be back in action against Montrose this weekend at the Penny Cars Stadium.

Centre-back Crighton reckons that they must get the New Broomfield faithful behind them against their Angus visitors – and improve their home form in the process.

“We’re really disappointed to be honest,” Crighton told the Advertiser.

“There was a few words said in the dressing room. I think we need a wake up call and maybe this is it.

“We finished fourth in the first quarter of the season and this was a good opportunity to get into the quarter final of a cup competition and it’s gone. We’re absolutely gutted about it.

“In the game we dominated but already got a few wins and some I don’t think we hurt them enough. Most of our attacks were coming from back-to-middle, and then we were shooting from distance when we shouldn’t be shooting.

“I think we made far too many errors. For me, I coach football as well, and the most difficult thing to do is score goals but you need to have something in the game.

“I’ve said to the boys that we need to get the fans behind us. We either need to go and shoot at goal, or take people on, make a good tackle, and get them behind us. I felt none of us did that against Elgin.

“I said to the boys after the game, we need to win our home games and I feel like at home we have been miles off it.”

He added: “There is something, I don’t know if it’s a fear, I don’t know what it is but we need to fix it if we want to be in the mix at the end of the season.

“Away from home we play with a lot more freedom. We need to make sure we are back on it and when we are at home that we dominate games.

“We might have to play a certain style at home, I don’t know, but we have to do something.” relax and take in the atmosphere. club, and a good result in the cup would add to that.”
