GARY: LET’S HIT THE GOAL TRAIL

Phillips is hoping Scottish Cup win can breathe new life into league campaign

- MARK PIRIE

Gary Phillips believes Albion Rovers can score their way back into form when they host minnows Fort William in the Scottish Cup.

The visitors travel down from m the Highlands with a reputation that t proceeds them for the first-round d clash – as one of the worst teams s in the Britain.

However, having finished d on negative points last season, , they have recruited loanees from m Inverness and have improved their ir record, winning twice so far this is season.

Rovers go into the game off the he back of three consecutive League ue Two defeats but midfielder Phillips ps says the players can ill afford to read ad into the reputation of the Fort – but ut is hoping to bag a hatful to raise spirits i it at the club.

“Being the favourites isn’t something we pay attention to,” Phillips told the Advertiser.

“We have got to go and be professional and win the game.

“It’s now a huge game for the squad. It’s no secret that we haven’t been getting the results we wanted at the start of the season and are not playing the best football.

“The cup gives us a chance to give the whole place a big lift. We want to show that we can play well, pick ourselves up and start to build some

momentum. “A good d result lt at th home in i cup builds confidence, and if you can go and score quite a few goals it will give strikers confidence they can carry that across to the league.

“When you’re in bad form you just don’t get the rub of the green and we are all feeling it. “Nobody is happy with the results but we want to turn the corner as quickly as possible.” He added: “In terms of their record, we don’t look into that too much. “We are going into the unknown a bit, but we look at what we can do, not what wha they are doing.” T The 31- year- old has enjoyed enjo big Scottish Cup moments while in C Cliftonhill colours – mo most notably scoring the winner against Mo Motherwell in the fou fourth round of the co competition as they rea reached the quarter fin finals in 2014. T The Cliftonhill ve veteran reckons a de decent cup run could result in a positi positive impact on their l league f form. “That run gave the dressing room a massive lift,” Phillips added. “We got some good results off the back of the big games. Everyone wants a big tie and it can have a really positive influence if you go on a bit of a run.”
