Baby break time can’t stop Terri succeeding

A former factory worker is on her way to a nursing career in Baillieston after landing a “life- changing” apprenticeship – despite finding out she was pregnant on her second day.
Terri Brown, 28, successfully completed a modern apprenticeship and, six years down the line, has now begun a four-year Open University nursing degree course.
She said: “I managed to complete my apprenticeship in social services, children and young people on time – despite having my maternity leave in the middle.
“My wee boy is five now and I’m just starting my degree course, which is both scary and exciting at the same time.
“After my apprenticeship I am now a family support worker, based in Baillieston health centre; I work with the health visiting team and provide parenting skills and baby massage, as well as assisting family access benefits.”
Terri added: “I am so glad I applied for the apprenticeship; it’s been life-changing.
“Six years ago I was working in a factory to get extra money and would never have dreamt I could have been a nurse.
“Two years ago I got a new team leader and she totally believes in me; it’s her that’s given me the confidence for the OU course – she urged me to apply.
“My apprenticeship has given me an insight to the nursing profession and opened doors for me.
“Working as part of the health visiting team has helped me grow and develop my knowledge and skills.”
Terri will now juggle study, her job with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC), – and being mum to five-year-old Charlie.
She said: “NHSGGC is giving me a half-day a week to help me complete my uni work. And, of course, there will be placements which will be in Shettleston health centre, in a hospital ward and also a spell with the district nurses.
“There is so much work to do but I am also really excited about the future.”
