Monklands youngsters were among pupils from 87 primary schools across North Lanarkshire who took part in events to introduce them to their new roles as junior road safety officers (JRSOs).

Gartlea and Moodiesburn’s Pivot community centres hosted gatherings hosted by the council’s road safety team designed to “inspire and support” the Primary Six and Seven kids.

JRSOs work with other pupils, teachers and parents throughout the school year to promote road safety by delivering presentations and campaigns, running competitions and maintaining a noticeboard.

The successful programme, which promotes road safety in “an informative, engaging way”, has been sponsored by Amey since 2004.

Among the Monklands primary schools taking part in the events – which also included a third gathering at The King’s Church in Motherwell – were Glenboig, Kirk O’ Shotts, Kirkshaws, St Patrick’s, Bargeddie, Chapelhall, Clarkston, Rochsolloch, Shawhead, St Andrew’s and St Serf’s.

Councillor Michael McPake, convener of the environment and transportation committee, said: “Being a junior road safety officer involves commitment and enthusiasm, and every year we are so impressed with the effort that pupils put into the role.

“The induction events are an opportunity for our new JRSOs to meet, share ideas and learn more about the job.

“I would like to thank our new recruits for volunteering and wish them well for the year ahead.”
