Gaffney: ‘Obviously something changed’
Hugh Gaffney told his former constituents it had
“been an honour to serve”after losing his seat as Coatbridge
MP.
The Labour representative saw the party’s vote share decrease by seven per cent.
Speaking after the result was announced, Mr
Gaffney told the Advertiser: “Representing people is an honour, and I’ve had the privilege of being down there since 2017. “I did all I can and wanted to help the community a lot more. I hope the people of Coatbridge, Chryston & Bellshill get what they want; I wish them all well.
“Obviously something changed, and democracy showed a result. Politics is a funny game – we win some, we lose some and I have to take it on the chin.
“Nationally, the two big things we talk about are Brexit and independence and they’re two massive bubbles to burst before politics can move on.
“My battle isn’t about independence or Brexit, my battle’s with kids going to school hungry and food banks being on the rise; I’ve fought poverty all my life and just feel people are being treated wrongly and getting missed out.”
He added:“I’ll take time out to reflect on my future;
I’ve got my family, I’m still a postman and I’ll be happy with whatever life throws at me – I’ll get up and get on with it and my sleeves are still rolled up to fight another day.
“Making life different for people was the best part of the role as MP.
“I just want to say thank you to constituents – and sorry I couldn’t continue that journey with you.”
