Shed festive weight at free weekly sessions
IAN BUNTING
Monklands residents looking to shed some of the extra pounds put on over the festive period can attend weekly weight management sessions run across the area by Lanarkshire group Weigh to Go.
The free sessions include an education element plus physical activity to suit all fitness levels aiming to help participants “become more active, eat well and lead a healthier lifestyle”.
Monklands- based classes take place at Airdrie Leisure Centre and the Time Capsule in Coatbridge.
Workshops are run by health and fitness instructors and cover topics such as identifying hidden fats and sugars, adding more activity to daily routines and alcohol within an individual’s diet.
Melanie Menzies of North Lanarkshire Leisure said: “Weigh to Go is not just a quick and fitness programme.
“For many people, it’s often hard to know where to start when it comes to losing weight; this programme not only helps do this but also shows how to stay fit, healthy and active.”
NHS Lanarkshire public health specialist Karen McGuigan added: “This is one of many initiatives we have to help improve the overall health and wellbeing of the Lanarkshire population.
“Being overweight and obese can cause aches and pains in muscles and joints, problems sleeping, a loss of energy and confidence or problems with self-esteem.
“It also increases the chance of developing health conditions including type 2 diabetes; participating in the Weigh to Go programme can help reduce these risks.”
The initiative first began in 2012 and has since had thousands of participants – many of whom have lost weight.
