Caldervale High fell silent to pay its respects to the victims of the Holocaust.

Everyone at the Airdrie school was in a solemn, poignant mood as they took part in events to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

Pupils from the school’s first and secondyear BOOKies group gathered to lead the tributes to the millions of people who tragically lost their lives in the Holocaust and other genocides.

Second-year youngster Keira Marshall lit a memorial candle on behalf of the literary lovers and the group then listened intently to a comprehensive talk by social subjects teacher Miss Thomson.

Mrs MacDonald later introduced the fitting theme for this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day – “Stand Together” – with a short film from the Holocaust Memorial Day website.

Pupils were also able to study a display of materials based on the Holocaust.

A moment of silence was then observed, during which the BOOKies members were able to reflect on what they had heard throughout the day.

A Caldervale High spokesperson said: “Every pupil in the school also had the opportunity to attend a Holocaust Memorial Day assembly.

“They all took the opportunity to reflect on the tragic loss of every victim of the Holocaust and other genocides across the globe.

“This is always a poignant day in the school’s calendar and we wish to thank the BOOKies group, and the staff who assisted them, for doing such a fine job in paying their respects.”
