Rovers win crucial basement battle

ALBION ROVERS................................4 BRECHIN CITY.....................................1

Boss Kevin Harper heaped praise on his Albion Rovers battling spirit in the crucial win over relegation- threatened Brechin City.

The home side fell behind in Coatbridge after loanee Nick McAllister was judged to have grabbed Andy Jackson.

Kieran Inglis converted from the spot before a Declan Bryne double alongside strikers from Daniel Scally and Scott Roberts earned a comfortable

Cliftonhill win.

The gaffer believes the squad showcased their best qualities against the rock-bottom Angus outfit.

“We were the better side for at least 80 minutes of the game,” Harper said.

“The conditions weren’t great but we adapted well to the game and responded to going a goal behind.

“In my view it was a very dubious penalty. The referee said that Nick pulled him but my question was how did the player fall the opposite way.

“However, the players regrouped and deserved the win in the end.

He added: “In all honesty we have not had the rub of the green all season.

“At the end of the day you need to deal with the situation you are in, and you hope decisions will go your way at some point.

“We have to make sure we are putting in the performances that earn these results.”

As they gear up for another crunch tie with Stenhousemuir this weekend, Harper hopes his players have turned a corner in the league campaign.

He added: “It will be a tough afternoon; we know that.

“They have got some decent results since January and we know they will test the players.

“We are on a good run as well. We have only lost one of our last eight and if the players play to their maximum they are a match for anyone in this league.

“The biggest thing for us earlier this season was that we had seven or eight injuries; I don’t know if any team in this league could handle missing that amount of players.

“We are now chipping away and hopefully we can end the season in a strong position.”
