RAM RAID FOILED BY BOLLARD

Supermarket sees early morning drama

- IAN BUNTING

A stolen dumper truck was deliberately ploughed into the grounds of an Airdrie supermarket during a dramatic attempted early-morning raid on its cash machine.

The destructive would-be thieves smashed the

vehicle – which is believed to have been swiped from a construction site on nearby Dunrobin Road – into a bollard at the Tesco Express store on Connor Street in Clarkston at 1.20am on Sunday.

The bollard – which was knocked over by the force of the truck’s impact – foiled the brazen culprits’ attempts to ram the store’s ATM.

The pair of men responsible for the attempted raid immediately fled the scene of their botched robbery.

Tesco confirmed none of its staff members were injured during the incident and the store and cash machine are “back open and trading as normal”.

Police are continuing to hunt the suspects – who were wearing “dark clothing” – with an appeal for witnesses ongoing.

Sergeant Scott Robertson, of Airdrie police station, told the Advertiser: “We’re appealing to the public who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously around the site on Dunrobin Road.

“We’re also appealing to anyone who saw the men after the truck was driven at the cash machine and, equally, anyone who has any information about this incident.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson added: “There have been no arrests made and our enquiries are continuing.

“Anyone with any information relating to the attempted robbery, or the suspects, can call Airdrie police on 101 or Crimestoppers, where anonymity is guaranteed, on 0800 555 111.”

Tesco said its was “grateful to the police for their speedy response” to the raid and that it is “working closely with the police as part of their investigations”.
