Anxiety over uncertain future of Freightliner site

As revealed in this week’s Advertiser, the future of Coatbridge rail freight and services terminal Freightliner is uncertain – with up to 100 jobs potentially at risk.

Coatb ridge MSP Fulton MacGregor, his Airdrie counterpart Alex Neil and Airdrie MP Neil Gray MP have vowed to do “all they can to try and save the facility and its jobs”.

Readers concerned over the Gartsherrie facility’s plight got in touch with our Facebook page, with Heather Waugh saying: “I’m a Freightliner train driver based at Mossend so Coatbridge is integral to our depot.

“The guys at Coatbridge are amazing and I’m sure our local MP and MSP will speak out for Scotland’s only intermodal terminal.”

Gary Hunter added: “It would be a real shame if this site goes as I know someone who works there and they are always speaking highly of the workforce.”

Catherine McIntyre posted: “I hope nothing bad comes of this and the secure. facility and jobs remain safe and

“The last thing Coatbridge needs is to lose an employer like this.”

David Penman commented: “I feel for all of the staff there; even if, God willing, everything works out in a positive manner, it will be a very worrying time for them just now.”

Moving on to other matters, predemolition work is underway at three Holehills tower blocks, which will be the first high-rise flats to be knocked down under North Lanarkshire’s housing regeneration programme.

Site clearance has now started at the eight-storey Cheviot, Merrick and Pentland Courts, with Central Demolition in place to carry out the 15-month project.

Advertiser Facebook reader Martin McWilliams responded: “I think North Lanarkshire Council should be doing more for homeless people!”

A view backed by Ruby Arbuckle: “Yes, I agree that they should be helping the homeless.”

Maxine Fleming welcomed the work, saying: “The tower blocks have had their day; it’s time to move on.”
