Church tuned in for anniversary milestone

-

Coatdyke Congregational Church enjoyed a noteperfect magical milestone.

The beloved Kippen Street venue marked its 109th anniversary by asking members to choose their favourite hymns and discuss why the songs are special to them.

Reflecting on the church’s impre s s i v e longevity, a spokesperson said: “The congregation are justifiably proud of the anniversary achievement and consider themselves fortunate to still have an interested and active congregation when so many churches are closing down.

“Our church is a little gem and has so many different things going on, including an active Sunday school, Girls’ Brigade, women’s group and knitting club, and over the years it has raised more than £8000 for Water Aid, while it currently supports the local foodbank.”

Members were delighted to play a crucial role in the church’s 109th anniversary celebrations with Reverend Alister Weighton, who only took up his post in July last year, thrilled by their engagement with the hymn selection.

The church spokesperson added: “Janice McKay chose Trust and Obey as her favourite hymn as she learned it when she was quite young and the values portrayed had stood her in good stead for many years.

“Yvonne McDermid, a regular visitor to the church, chose to remind everyone of the simple message of faith by choosing What a Friend We Have in Jesus.

“She believed that being able to take any care to God in prayer was one of the best things about having a faith.

“Other members who kindly contributed were Marion Gray and Christine Fettes.

“Reverend Weighton closed the service with his own choice of hymn, Will Your Anchor Hold?, which reminded him of Boys’ Brigade evenings but, most importantly, that Christ is the rock to depend on at any time.

“The congregation thoroughly enjoyed the service and went home very uplifted.

“Despite marking 109 years in existence, the church is still going strong and has a bright future ahead of it.”
