Show no fear to speak up about hate crime

-

The youth service of charity Crimestoppers is urging Airdrie and Coatbridge youngsters to speak up about hate crime, while maintaining their anonymity.

Fearless.org has worked closely with a selection of key Scottish equality charities to provide resources to anyone working with youths.

Staff and young volunteers went full steam ahead to visit train stations to raise awareness of hate crime and remind youngsters of their “unique 100 per cent anonymous service”.

Hate crimes are those motivated by hostility towards a particular group based on race, religion, transgender identity, sexual orientation or disability.

Victims may be subjected to physical assaults or suffer damage to their property; they may also experience the threat of an attack or verbal abuse.

Hate crime is believed to be massively under- reported in Scotland and can often take place on public transport, which is why Fearless.org was delighted to be supported by Network Rail for the important campaign.

As with all crime, people are asked to contact Police Scotland or British Transport Police.

However, if you feel unable to speak directly to the authorities, then Fearless.org is here for young people as “a safe way to challenge intolerance and help keep all our communities safe”.

Lyndsay McDade, Scotland’s senior youth projects officer for Crimestoppers, said: “When faced with the knowledge or suspicion of who is responsible for hate crimes, young people often struggle with the dilemma of what to do.

“They can be frightened to speak up for fear of stigma or reprisal; Fearless.org gives young people a way to be empowered and stand up to hate.

“Scotland is full of diverse communities, vibrant cultures, rich talents and resilience; it is vital that we stand together to say that hate has no place in our country.

“If you know or suspect anyone responsible for hate crime, please report it via Fearless.org which is our completely anonymous online form.”
