Politicians stress seriousness of situation

-

Airdrie’s parliamentarians are asking residents to “take the coronavirus very seriously and exercise personal responsibility to prevent its spread”.

Neil Gray MP and Alex Neil MSP are echoing the advice to stay at home and avoid unnecessary social contact as they warned of the “severity of the escalating situation in Scotland”.

Former health secretary Mr Neil said: “If constituents believe they have the virus, or suffer similar symptoms, they should be staying at home and self-isolating.

“Obviously, we cannot prevent all transmissions of this disease but we must take great care.

“I’d also urge everyone to do what they can to help others, such as checking on elderly and vulnerable neighbours who may require a helping hand or a friendly chat.”

He added that advice is “on the guidelines of health professionals” and said: “I urge the public to keep up to date with the latest instructions which can benefit themselves, their families and the wider community.”

Constituency counterpart Mr Gray agreed: “While we are aware that people have to go shopping and look after relatives, it is vitally important that we all listen to the advice that is coming out of Westminster and Holyrood with regard to social distancing.

“If people are able to help out any neighbours or relatives without putting themselves at risk, then I would urge them to please do so – this is a time for communities to come together.”

He added: “We are fighting to ensure that everyone has the financial support from government to get through this crisis whether they are in receipt of benefits, off work or selfemployed, and Alex and I will do all we can to help constituents get the best advice and support available.”
