Change of plan as couple wed early

A young Airdrie couple were forced to change their recent wedding plans due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Kara Lochrie and Edward Cairns, both 19, decided to bring their nuptials forward by a few days but despite their initial disappointment, the lovebirds tied the knot at Airdrie registry office in a “lovely ceremony” conducted by registrar Isabell Gartshore last Wednesday, March 18.

Blushing bride Kara looked picture perfect in a beautiful Asos ivory satin gown holding a bouquet of peonies and sunflowers, while her handsome groom Edward waited nervously with his brother and best man Michael.

Kara was accompanied down the aisle by her aunt and maid of honour Emma Lochrie; her bridesmaids were best friends Johana Melicharova and sister-inlaw Susie; and flower girls were her younger sister Lauren, 13, and nine-yearold cousin Ava Gallagher.

Describing how her newly arranged nuptials came together, Kara told the Advertiser: “I was really stressed about contacting Airdrie registry office and all our guests, but everyone rallied round.

“We decided to change it at the last minute because of the coronavirus. I rang the registry office on the Tuesday to tell them that we wanted to bring our wedding forward by a couple of days, and they were quite happy to do that for us.

“I was really stressed because I couldn’t get hold of Edward who was at work; he’s been really busy at the moment.

“But I was thrilled when the staff at Rumours salon in Broomknoll Street managed to change my appointment at the last minute.

“I would like to thank Claire who did my hair and Chloe for doing my make- up and making me look so beautiful; I would recommend them to any bride.”

Kara, a natural sciences student at the Open University, and Edward, a warehouse operative at Tesco in his home town, were joined by 25 members of their close family and friends who came along to celebrate their very special day.

Kara explained: “The do went well but I was more nervous about falling down in my heels.

“My dad and step-mum were able to attend and Edward’s mum and dad came along.

“My mum couldn’t go but my dad videoed the whole ceremony so at least she can see it.

“I was really happy and nervous, but I think it was wedding nerves and we still had a lovely ceremony in the registry office.

“Afterwards everyone came along to our house and the Royal Tandoori takeaway restaurant in Airdrie accommodated our massive food order.”

Edward added: “We were lucky it was only a couple of days before our big day; it wasn’t the worst thing in the world.”

The Airdrie newlyweds were left devastated after their honeymoon was cancelled at short notice by the Douglas hotel on the Isle of Arran on Friday morning.

A distraught Kara said:

“Even our honeymoon has been cancelled.

“We have re-booked it for November, so we’re hoping that we will be able to go then.”

Childhood sweethearts Kara, an ex St Ambrose High pupil, and Edward, formerly of St Margaret’s High, have been together for more than three years and were introduced through mutual friends in December 2016.

They spent their first date at a local pizza restaurant.

And despite the current circumstances across the globe, the young Monklands newlyweds are now looking forward to spending “a blissful life together”.
