Go really wild for bird snaps Zoom in on feathered friends

-

While many people may be confined to their homes for a while, they can still pop out into the garden and take part in a national photography competition.

Home and garden retailer Wilko is inviting snappers in Airdrie and Coatbridge to share their best wild bird photos in its annual contest to capture the best of our feathered friends.

The winning images will feature in Wilko’s 2021 Wild Bird Calendar and win one of 12 gift cards worth £100.

Daniel Bingham, senior pets buyer for Wilko, offered some practical advice to would-be wildlife snappers and said: “Birds feed every day and don’t store energy well, so one or two bad days in cold weather or without food can be dangerous for them.

“Put out a good selection of food in feeders or on tables to attract birds – things like fat balls are nutritious and high in energy. Also put soft food down for the songbirds who can’t reach the feeders. Suet blocks and pellets work particularly well.

“Don’t forget to provide fresh water. Ponds and puddles may freeze over.

“Birds can be timid so you’ll need to be patient, build up trust by sharing plenty of treats and you could soon be rewarded with the perfect wild bird shot.”

The competition runs until March 29. All photos should be taken in a garden or outdoor setting and must have been taken by you.
