DEAL DOUBT FOR LOAN KID

Smith wants guidance during shutdown

-

Airdrie loan kid Callum Smith has urged Scottish football bosses to provide contract clarity amid the SPFL shutdown.

Forward Smith penned a season- long loan with the Diamonds last summer from Dunfermline, with his Pars contract to expire at the end of the current campaign.

However, with the League One season on hold and the days on his two deals counting down, the 20-year-old admits he has no clue what the future holds for him.

The New Broomfield star is on the comeback trail from injury, which has also been hampered by being unable to leave his home.

“The advice from both clubs has been just to stay at home,” said Smith.

“I’ve got a treadmill at home so I just do my own stuff, but I’m injured just now.

“I had been going in and getting treatment but I can’t really do that anymore.

“It’s been a bit of a nightmare for me. I’m a bit unsure about what is going to happen with contracts, training, and when the league is going to start again; the worst bit is not knowing.

“If we had a proper date set, it would be a bit better but everything is up in the air just now.

“I’ve been talking to my agent about it but with everything that is going on I’m not sure at all what’s happening; I’m going to have to wait and see.

“Hopefully they come to an agreement soon on what’s going to be happening.

“They will need to let the players know because everybody is a bit unsure.

“We were getting to the point in the season where we were hopefully going to be in play-offs or promoted, so it’s come at a bad time for us.

“I’m hoping for some kind of advice or resolution from the SFA or the PFA. There is going to be a lot of boys in the same position as me; it’s not just me at the end of the day.”

With Ian Murray’s side challenging at the top of League One, Smith admits the players would be “gutted” if the season was thrown out.

However, the pacey winger says he has loved his time in the diamond – even if he doesn’t get the chance to pull it on again.

“I’ve played every league game and that’s what I came to do, it’s been brilliant,” he added.

“I wanted to come here to play football and that’s what has happened.

“It’s been perfect from my point of view.”
