Don’t void the Airdrie season

-

Saturday football has always given me an extra structure to my life.

That might be sad to admit but it does not mean I put it above all my other relationships, although my wife might disagree.

There is just something about celebrating a win or moaning about a defeat.

The chance to meet up with friends and acquaintances over so many games raises the sense of being part of something.

There has been much discussion of sound mental health in our society and, curiously, going to a game can do a lot for that.

Yes, it can sometimes make you despair as you lose 7-2 at Cliftonhill, but there is always a chance to even the score on another day.

The sheer delight of winning a league title at Alloa, not long after we had been liquidated, lingers long in the memory.

There are greater things to be concerned about in this crisis but I have been reading a lot on the debate about what should happen to this 75 per cent season.

To wipe out all the goals and scores, all the good and bad experiences of the game, would be wrong. To think that Nat Wedderburn’s winning goal against Forfar becomes null and void is a poor decision.

Paul McKay’s long throw which produced Calum Gallager’s last minute winner at Falkirk would be gone - a shame indeed. So that’s not for me.

Finish the games when it is deemed to be safe appeals to me.

Everyone gets what they earned whether it’s Falkirk squeaking through as league winners, or Airdrie failing in another play off.

Awarding the various titles and relegation and skipping play-offs has some appeal, in that it has an end result.

It takes away, however, the hope that is always there for fans that our team could somehow pull off a run in the last quarter.

The drama would be gone from the League One season.

The prospects of all 42 clubs surviving to continue is another debate for another day, and it must be a real worry for the owners of what is after all as much as a business and employment entity, as it is sporting entertainment for us. It must be a worrying time for full time players as indeed for all workers in other sectors.

I suspect that there could be a worst case scenario in that the game might not be safe to resume even in September.

For the time being, I am watching old reruns of classic games, and still paying the BBC and Sky for the pleasure of repeats. Take care.

To wipe out all of the goals would be wrong
