A leading health charity has hailed the impact a Lanarkshire counselling service has had on people living with multiple sclerosis (MS).

During MS Awareness Week ( April 20-26), the MS Society Lanarkshire local group’s Talking Therapy service helped nearly 70 people receive the mental health and emotional support they need.

Launched in 2018, the sessions are provided by a trained therapist with specific MS knowledge.

By creating a service specifically for people living with MS and their family and carers, the group have been able to offer more relevant support as well as ensuring people can access the help they needed more quickly.

Karen Henvey, group co- ordinator, said: “We had been talking about providing something like a counselling service for a long time. There’s definitely an un-met need as the NHS services are carrying a really heavy burden, and that’s for everyone across the country not just people living with MS.

“Issues with mental health are a big concern for our community – people living with MS, their families, friends and carers – so we’ve been pleased to offer some support in that regard.”

The emotional effects of MS often go undiagnosed and it is thought that up to half of people with MS might experience depression at some point after their diagnosis.

Stress affects a body’s ability to fight disease – so it can be particularly important to learn ways of managing it as much as possible.

As a result, emotional and mental health support can have a positive impact on the physical wellbeing of people living with MS.

The MS Society Lanarkshire local group are dedicated volunteers committed to ensuring they can offer support and services to residents at low or no cost.

From fundraising and social activities to counselling services, the group is proactive in ensuring that the local community can stay connected.

Morna Simpkins, director of MS Society Scotland, said: “The work the Lanarkshire group has done to support people in their area is really fantastic and I’m sure there are countless people in Lanarkshire who are thankful for that.

“To see the number of people they have helped, and will continue to help, in such a short time underlines the huge impact this terrific service is having for our community.”
