Sweet treat for care homes
Residents of Monklands care homes were treated to a sweet gesture by a Lanarkshire cake firm.
Special Days Cakes have offered to make sure no-one misses out on their big day by offering to make free birthday cakes for any residents living in the county’s care homes.
The generous move is courtesy of award-winning cake makers Michael Burns and Stephen Whyteside.
And with more than 300 free orders, the Uddingston business is doing its best to help families who are unable to see their loved ones during the pandemic.
From Rawyards Nursing Home in Airdrie and Coatbridge’s Summerlee House to Douglas View in Hamilton, the couple have been busy making and delivering the cakes in a bid to put a smile on residents’ faces.
Michael explained: “We came up with the idea as most care homes had to stop families bringing in cakes due to strict regulations.
“As we’re a food manufacturer we are allowed to deliver, however lots of families don’t have the money just now to buy these cakes.
“Our 90-year-old mum lives with us and morale is imperative for her health, and wee fun things help us all through this hurdle we are all crossing.
“Residents and staff in the care homes need to grasp every opportunity to lift their spirits, and a wee cake gets everyone involved for anyone who has a birthday.
“Although we’ve had to postpone over 500 weddings due to the virus, this has given us a purpose and uplifted our own personal spirits.
“Stephen and I have been selfisolated for eight weeks; as we’re a couple it’s safe for us to go to our bakery and make things safely.”
