Plea for people to put an end to rubbish dumping in Airdrie community
IAN BUNTING
A concerned resident of an Airdrie street has hit out at the “disrespectful” people blighting the area by dumping rubbish on the streets.
Kanti Kandikonda has highlighted the “significant issue” of fly-tipping on Yetts Hole Road throughout the coronavirus lockdown.
With the Scottish Government still ordering waste recycling centres to remain closed, Kanti is concerned people’s health and the environment will suffer if residents continue to leave their rubbish in the community.
Kanti said: “One morning we went out for a walk and while taking in the fresh air and appreciating the beautiful nature, we had to bear piles of rubbish and garbage dumped at a few places on Yetts Hole Road.
“Despite the current circumstances of Covid-19, council personnel are working hard to keep the surroundings clean by risking exposure.
“Such an effort is being disrespected by this irresponsible fly-tipping.
“It is also important to realise the harmful impact this will have on the environment; birds, squirrels and small creatures fall prey to the toxic consumption.
“We urge residents to act responsibly and understand how their behaviour affects nature.
“Please visit the council website for more details at https://www.northlanarkshire. gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=3752.”
A council spokesperson added: “Flytipping is illegal and anyone caught faces a £200 fixed penalty notice.
“We are one of the councils continuing to provide a full household waste collection service that includes residual general household waste, food and garden waste and recycling waste.
“We understand that residents may have more waste than normal but household waste recycling centres across Scotland are closed in line with government guidance on essential travel and physical distancing.
“This issue is being discussed at a national level and we await guidance from the Scottish Government.”
