Thanks are given for letter sent to kids of NHS staff

- IAN BUNTING

NHS Lanarkshire has been praised by staff after letters were sent thanking them for all their hard work and dedication during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The heartfelt letters, addressed to the doctors’ and nurses’ children, popped through the letterboxes of several employees in a very welcome surprise.

One nurse, whose husband also works in Monklands Hospital, said she was “thrilled” to have received the wonderful words.

Part of the letter states: “Your mum and dad have to go to work when some other people don’t.

“This is because they are doing a really important job helping all of us at the hospital to look after people who are ill.

“We’re all working together to help get things back to normal as soon as we can.

“What your mum and dad are doing is really special.

“We’re proud of them and you should be too.

“You should also be proud of yourselves because you are helping them.

“We couldn’t do this without your mum and dad.

“So, we’re sending a big thank you to them and to you for sharing them with us.”

The kind-hearted letter concludes by asking the creative children if they could draw a picture to brighten up the hospital.

All of the outstanding pictures will be put up in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Kay Sandilands, NHS Lanarkshire’s director of human resources, is delighted with the response the letter has garnered from everyone fortunate enough to have received it.

She said:“The idea of the letter was initiated by staff within the emergency department at University Hospital Monklands.

“And the template letter was then developed by the team.

“Due to its success, the letter was thereafter included in NHS Lanarkshire’s daily communication briefing.

“All staff have access to this briefing and could personalise the letter for their own children.

“Feedback has shown the letter has been extremely well received by the staff.”
