Tributes flood in for ‘a legend’
Following the devastating news of Rab’s passing the Barn boxing club, where the local legend trained many fighters, and helped put thousands of youngsters on the right path, shared the following statement on its Facebook page: “It’s with great sadness I have to announce that Rab passed.
“He was a massive figure in the community and did so much for the young boys and girls of our community. Please say a prayer for the family at such a sad time.”
Coatbridge comic book writer, and Rab’s relative, Mark Millar wrote: “Just got word my oldest cousin Rab Bannan has passed away.
“A large number of local followers here who knew him and even trained with him in the boxing world so I just wanted to get the word out. He was a legend and a great Coatbridge guy. “RIP to a fine man.”
Coatbridge MSP Fulton MacGregor said: “I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Rab Bannan. He truly is a local legend and well known for helping to develop some of the best boxers in the world right here in this area.
“Perhaps his greatest achievement was the opportunities he gave to youngsters across Coatbridge, and further afield, to change their lives in a positive way.
“He was a mentor and inspiration to many over the generations and will be sadly missed. My heartfelt sympathies go out to all his family and friends at this difficult time.”
Airdrie South councillor Michael Coyle, who was a good friend of Rab, commented: “I knew Rab very well from my time living in Coatbridge years ago. He was a lovely, generous man who was very highly thought of by everyone who knew him.
“He gave many boxers opportunities they would never have had, including Ricky Burns. He was still training right until the end and was a very fit man.
“Coatbridge, and
Monklands, has lost one of its most famous sons.”
