An inspiring instructor based at Coatbridge fire station has won a prestigious national award for her work with local young people.

Scottish Fire and Rescue ( SFRS) service employee Demi O’Mellon won the “young person role model” category at this year’s women in the fire service awards.

The 23-year-old is an instructor on the Fire Reach programme at the Coatdyke station, which sees young people learn about fire, water and road safety as well as developing social and communication skills and self-confidence.

Demi, who started out as a volunteer three years ago, says she was “lost for words” to win the prize at the prestigious ceremony – held online this year – which recognises those who have made outstanding contributions.

She said: “I knew I was nominated, but never did I think I would win; I’m overwhelmed and feel so proud of myself for achieving such an amazing award.

“In my role, I engage with children and young people to raise awareness and to build up social skills, and one of the major rewards is seeing their confidence build over the time we have them.”

She added: “I love what I do – it’s always a bonus when you don’t feel like you’re working half the time, because you’re having so much fun and making people smile.”

Fire Reach has been running in North Lanarkshire for 14 years and was developed to help engage with young people, some of whom have come from challenging and difficult backgrounds.

Demi was praised by SFRS for “tapping into her experiences growing up and having an incredible impact on the young people who attend the programme, particularly those who are care experienced”.

Area commander Stephen Wright, who is the local senior officer for North Lanarkshire, said: “Demi’s ongoing commitment will continue to give our young people from disadvantaged backgrounds new aspirations and opportunities, that will create a brighter future for them.”

Chief officer Martin Blunden added his congratulations, saying: “Our mission across SFRS is to ensure that women like Demi can truly thrive and reach their potential.

“We are working hard to develop a lasting culture of equality so that women who choose a career in the fire service get the same opportunities to succeed.”
