Online gallery salutes heroes of Far East

- JUDITH TONNER

Residents of Airdrie and Coatbridge are being invited to contribute to an online album paying tribute to those who served in the Far East during World War II.

Members of the Children of Far East Prisoners of War group are aiming to collate a total of 1000 photographs of military personnel who were involved in the Far East campaign in time for Remembrance Day next month.

They have so far collected 600 pictures of people who served there, having been inspired to begin the tribute project two months ago at the 75th anniversary of VJ Day.

It marked the moment Japan surrendered on August 15, 1945, effectively ending World War II.

The Far East campaign fought by British, Allied and Commonwealth forces since December 1941 became known as “the Forgotten War” and saw many thousands of men being captured and enduring years of captivity in prisoner of war camps.

A statement from the tribute group said: “Our aim is to collect 1000 photos of those who were involved in the war in the Far East, to symbolise the many thousands who sacrificed so much in the service of their country.

“Many never made it home, and the majority of those who did were left mentally and physically scarred by the experience.

“They deserve our thanks, our respect and this very special tribute.

“We are asking those who have a relative who served in the Far East in WWII to allow us to include a photo of them in our gallery of heroes and want to make more people aware of this idea so that more relatives are able to participate.”

Organisers are asking that one photo of each person, preferably on their own and in uniform if possible, is submitted together with any available details of their service, such as where they served and with which regiment or squadron.

Photos can be submitted by galleryofheroes@ outlook. com or by finding the “VJ Day Gallery of Heroes” group on Facebook.
