Guest speaker for college students is Brit of alright

A Brit Award-nominated songwriter, producer and musician struck a chord with Monklands students.

Jim Duguid was a fountain of knowledge as he gave a guest lecture to music students from New College Lanarkshir­e.

Glasgow- born Jim found success as the right-hand man to Paolo Nutini on his triple platinum selling debut album These Streets.

Jim co-wrote several of Paolo’s biggest hits, including New Shoes and Last Request, and toured with the Paisley star for seven years.

In 2011 he enjoye d internatio­nal success after penning the massive worldwide hit song Too Close with artist Alex Clare.

The song spent more than a year on the US Billboard chart and gained a Brit Award nomination.

Jim’s guest talk was organised by college music lecturer Yvonne Tipping, who studied with Jim at university.

She said: “Jim talked in great detail about his incredible career, and the students were blown away by his advice and stories.

“It was very inspiring for them to hear the insight he gave into the business side of the industry, which really goes hand in hand with what our students are currently learning on their course.”

Jim added: “It was a fantastic day; so rewarding for me.

“I find it such a privilege to be able to pass on some of my experience and knowledge onto a new generation of young aspiring and inspiring creatives.

“From early years through primary school, secondary school, college and university courses, a well- funded music education system is a key contributo­r to our social developmen­t and the continued successful growth and export of Scottish musical talent.”

Music and music business students from New College Lanarkshir­e have enjoyed a series of lectures from wellknown industry figures recently, including Stevie Wonder’s manager Keith Harris, violin wizard Nora Germain, Ivor Novello-winning songwriter Eliot Kennedy and singer-songwriter Dave Okumu.
