Hospice cash hits £100k mark

St Margaret’s youngsters raise money over two decades

- IAN BUNTING

An Airdrie school marked a fantastic fundraising milestone as it hit the £100,000 mark in its donated support for St Andrew’s Hospice.

It has taken just two decades for St Margaret’s High pupils and staff to collect the astonishing total in a clear example of the “special relationship” between the secondary school and the hospice.

And not even Covid-19 could stop the school’s fabulous financial backing with the latest events held to take it to the magical £100,000 mark a Christmas jumper day, a Christmas door competition and ambassadors making and selling their own baubles.

Andrew Flynn, the hospice’s schools and development co- ordinator, said: “The relationship between the hospice and St Margaret’s High School started in 1999 and every year the school has made donations to the hospice through a variety or means.

“These have included Ben Nevis and Tinto Hill sponsored climbs; 6K fun run and race; work by ambassador pupils; an “I’m a Teacher Get Me Out of Here” event; teachers versus pupils sporting days; golf and dress down days; and a whole host of other activities.

“They have also had pupils come and get involved with our patients by holding bingo sessions, indoor curling, cake decorating, indoor bowls and quizzes.

“We have even had classes make bird boxes for our cards, face masks at the start of the pandemic and baubles for our patients’ Christmas trees.

“Their support has been incredible over the years but the past few months have been extra special.

“Things have been hard for everyone during this pandemic, however the pupils and staff at St Margaret’s High still find the time, energy and kindness to help support people who are receiving end of life and palliative care.

“I would like to thank head teacher Mr Snee, Mrs Williamson, Mrs Killean and every single person associated with St Margaret’s High for keeping the hospice in their hearts; and for being such good friends and role models to the people of Lanarkshire.”

A St Margaret’s High spokesperson added: “We are delighted to reach the £100,000 mark in our fundraising for the hospice.

“We have a special relationship with the hospice and this wonderful total is a testament to that, and everyone’s kindness and hard work.”
